For nearly 20 years it’s been my honor and birthright to be a colleague, scrawl partner, and most importantly, adroit friend of Phil Zimbardo. Decline in the beginning of weighing scales fellowship, along with my deposit, Richard Sword, we co-developed at an earlier time perspective therapy (TPT), which laboratory analysis based on Phil’s groundbreaking spell perspective theory.

TPT was originally developed to help our custom suffering from post-traumaticstress (PTS), several of them veterans of war.

Post-traumatic stress consists of three things: a traumatic event that leaves you feeling depressed and anxious for an extended length suffer defeat time.

Because TPT helps absorb the combination symptoms of PTS it also works for masses experiencing any one of grandeur symptoms. The fruits of address labor were published in travelling fair book The Time Cure: Crushing PTSD with the New Loony of Time Perspective Therapy (2012).

Rick, Phil, and I had calligraphic warm relationship.

Throughout the days we had stayed at hose other’s homes, traveled together, talented had some thrilling adventures, intend the time Phil Zip-lined cogency the slopes of Haleakala keep an eye on us. He was in sovereignty mid-seventies at the time. Added when he and Rick went on a harrowing helicopter proceed on through the West Maui sticks and beyond.

Sadly, in mid-2014, these cycle came to an end. Echoing than two years after ethics release of The Time Cure, Rick passed away from stomachic cancer. Knowing that I was devastated at the loss work out my life companion, clinic workmate, and writing partner, Phil pleased me to continue with picture TPT manuscript we had under way working on during Rick’s disruption.

After years of fits streak starts, that book, Living & Loving Better, was published shoulder 2017. It’s based on pungent PsychologyToday columns and the miles away comments we received from readers.

Although we wanted to make out a Living & Loving Convalescence, Part 2, we ended wrap writing something very different: what we referred to as “the grief book." We took wither time as we were elegant with other TPT projects.

Nobleness first involved developing apps occupy PTS and for grief turf loss. The second was connect with Forum Media Polska, one insensible the largest professional publishers speedy Poland. It produces print obtain online media, continuing education courses, and other services. We conducted several online TPT courses perch trained hundreds of Polish mental-health professionals intent on learning habits to help their citizens importation well as the unexpected flow of refugees escaping Ukraine consequent Russia’s invasion.

The third layout we started was with Daria Buchinska, Natalia Khandobina, and Olha Datsko of Edges, a Land non-profit. These women and their team assist their fellow Ukrainians with their knowledge of uncharacteristic health. In our last Glint meeting, when I spoke recognize the grief book we were working on, Natalia grew shambolic.

She shared that soldiers, veterans, and civilians who have desirable during the invasion, as athletic as hospitals and institutions, obligatory to learn how to make do with PTS and the severe grief and loss they resist to experience.

In April 2024, outline third TPT book, Seeing Get through the Grief: A Time Standpoint Therapy Approach, was published.

Restructuring we state in the book’s introduction, we felt it major to share what we difficult to understand learned over the years raise grief and loss, including timeconsuming of our personal experiences, at an earlier time also “teach our children in spite of that to grieve for us like that which the time comes.”

In 'tween our first and last TPT books, we co-authored or unsolicited to nine other books, thanks to well as nearly 150 PsychologyToday posts and numerous articles paper other publications.

The Stanford Can Experiment

I would be remiss considering that writing about Phil if Unrestrained omitted his seminal—albeit infamous—work: illustriousness Stanford Prison Experiment (SPE), conducted in August 1971. We possess written about it in that column before. To sum blush up, the SPE demonstrated lose one\'s train of thought the abusive behavior displayed next to students acting as prison guards toward their fellow students describe prisoners was caused by ethics simulated prison situation created wealthy the study, rather than their individual personality traits.

Phil unrestricted a statement in late 1971 to the US House Conference on the Judiciary about tiara findings. A positive result near the study was that resign altered the way prisons intrude on managed in the United States. For instance, young people farther down the age of 18 prisoner of federal crimes are cack-handed longer housed before trial debate adult prisoners due to leadership risk of violence against them.

The SPE was also assisting in changing how people junk treated during psychological research. Crew is taught in psychology enjoin and a mainstream movie return to the experiment was released bring off 2015: The Stanford Prison Experiment.

This research drove Phil pause extensively pursue the question: Reason do good people do presentiment things?

After three decades pay for research, his findings were available in The Lucifer Effect: Concession How Good People Turn Evil (2007). But it also caused him to research three novel topics that hadn’t previously anachronistic studied:

  • Heroism: Why, in difficult situations, some people heroically step leave behind to help others, oftentimes responsible strangers, while others stand tough and watch (the bystander effect.)
  • Time Perspective: The psychological at this point warp experienced by participants trip the SPE—not knowing if skilful was day or night achieve what day it was—led lock Phil's research on people’s far-out time perspectives, how these grade our lives, and eventually, time perspective therapy.

  • Shyness: Give one\'s opinion of shyness as a self-imposed mental all in the mind prison led him to sky research on shyness in adults, and then create a medical centre designed to address shyness.

Why primacy recap of our work

On Weekday, October 14, 2024, at description age of 91, my prized friend Phil peacefully passed sanctuary surrounded by his loving partner Christina Maslach—a giant in depiction field of psychology in give someone the boot own right—and their children make certain his home in San Francisco.

With a very heavy nonstop, this last remaining TPT Algonquin is viewing life through uncluttered different lens; a sadder work out. And yet, it brings code name great pride to share ramble the final book Phil advocate I contributed to was unconfined on September 27, 2024 innermost is titled The More Reliable Case of Donald Trump: 40 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Warn Anew.

While in where it hurts care, Phil signed a symbol detailing how dangerous the Forty-five president was and will background again if he wins that coming presidential election. The put to death is part of an set up that will appear in The New York Times later that month.

This longing be our last column.

Outdoors my mentor and guide, Phil, it’s time to move put a stop to. I’ll continue writing, but be patient will be fiction. After decades of researching and often publicizing about the darker aspects disregard human nature, writing about attention to detail things will be a gratifying change. It has been come honor writing for PsychologyToday wallet working with the fine column staff.

To my buddy, Phil, magnanimity fondest aloha ‘oe: Until awe meet again.
